Father: Unlocking the Heart of Prayer
A 5-day devotional series based on Luke 11:1-4 and the teaching of Pastor Josh Hawkins at Fremont Community Church.
Day 1: Starting with Relationship
"One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.' He said to them, 'When you pray, say: Father...'" - Luke 11:1-2
Prayer is not a religious duty or an appeal to a distant judge. Jesus begins prayer with a single, relational word: Father. Before we bring our requests, worries, or plans, Jesus invites us to pause and anchor our hearts in relationship: knowing who God is, and remembering who we are as His beloved children.
Reflection: Before you begin praying today, pause for 60 seconds to simply remember that you are speaking with a loving Father.
Prayer: Father, quiet my busy thoughts today. Before I ask for anything, help me rest in the truth that You are my Father and I am Your child. Amen.
Day 2: The Heart of an Intercessor
"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people..." - 1 Timothy 2:1
Intercession is not complicated or reserved for a select spiritual few; it is simply taking time to pray for people other than ourselves. When we bring the names and needs of our church, family, leaders, and community before God, we join the Father's heart in caring for others.
Reflection: Who in your church or family can you specifically lift up in prayer today?
Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to the needs of the people around me. Give me a willing heart to stand in prayer for others this week. Amen.
Day 3: Identity and Purpose
"For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name." - Ephesians 3:14-15
"Why were you searching for me? Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house [about my Father's business]?" - Luke 2:49
Earthly fathers pass down a family name, but our Heavenly Father gives us our eternal identity. As sons and daughters of God, we are not mere servants trying to earn approval-we are children invited into the Father's business, participating in His kingdom purposes with confidence.
Reflection: In what areas of your life are you living like an anxious servant rather than a trusted son or daughter?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me Your child. Free me from an orphan mindset and help me walk boldly in the purpose You have prepared for me. Amen.
Day 4: Expecting Good Gifts
"Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? ... If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" - Luke 11:11, 13
If imperfect human parents know how to care for their children, how much more does our Heavenly Father delight in providing what is good? God is not reluctant or hard to convince. When we ask, we are not informing an ignorant God; we are inviting our generous Father into our lives and deepening our trust in Him.
Reflection: What need or burden do you need to bring to your Father with expectant faith today?
Prayer: Father, forgive me for doubting Your goodness. I choose to trust that You know what I need and that Your heart toward me is full of love and generosity. Amen.
Day 5: Crying Out 'Abba'
"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'" - Romans 8:15
Jesus used the Aramaic word Abba-an intimate term of childlike trust and affection. We do not approach the Creator as strangers walking on eggshells. We come to a Father whose arms are open wide, welcoming us to sit at His table and find rest in His presence.
Reflection: How does knowing God as your intimate "Abba" change the way you approach your daily prayer time?
Prayer: Abba Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family. Let Your perfect love cast out all fear as I draw near to You today. Amen.
