Faith in an Age of Artificial Intelligence

A 5-day devotional series on navigating modern technology with biblical wisdom, based on the teaching by Pastor Josh Hawkins at Fremont Community Church.

Day 1: Wisdom, Not Fear

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." - 2 Timothy 1:7
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." - James 1:5

Rapid technological transformation often creates panic or anxiety about the future. Yet the Christian posture is never rooted in fear. While Scripture doesn't mention modern computing by name, God has given us His Holy Spirit and timeless wisdom to evaluate every cultural shift. Rather than retreating in fear or blindly adopting every trend, we can approach new tools with clarity and discernment, knowing that Jesus remains on the throne.

Reflection When you think about technological change, does your first reaction stem from anxiety or from trust in God's sovereignty?
Prayer Lord, grant me a spirit of wisdom and a sound mind. Help me navigate the changing world around me with confidence in Your unchanging truth. Amen.

Day 2: Tools vs. Idols

"See, the Lord has chosen Bezalel... and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills-to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze." - Exodus 31:2-4
"Their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see..." - Psalm 115:4-5

Throughout history, God has gifted humanity with the skill to create and use tools for the flourishing of community and the glory of God. A tool exists to serve a purpose under human direction. However, when we begin placing our trust, our identity, or our emotional reliance in created objects, tools cross the line into idols. AI can assist our productivity, but it must never become our refuge.

Reflection Are there technologies or digital habits in your life that have slowly shifted from being helpful tools to emotional crutches?
Prayer Heavenly Father, teach me to use the tools of my generation with skill and integrity, but guard my heart from ever placing my trust in anything other than You. Amen.

Day 3: What Algorithms Can Never Replace

"Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?" - 1 Corinthians 3:16
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God..." - 1 John 4:1

An algorithm can predict words, but it has no soul, no conviction, and no relationship with the Creator. God does not speak through machine code; the Holy Spirit dwells within the living temple of believers. AI cannot receive divine revelation, offer genuine personal relationship, shepherd human hearts, or exercise spiritual discernment. We must protect the sacred spaces of prayer, fellowship, and pastoral care that belong exclusively to God's people.

Reflection How can you prioritize authentic, in-person Christian relationships over digital substitutes this week?
Prayer Holy Spirit, thank You for dwelling within me and speaking directly to my heart. Keep me attuned to Your voice and grounded in true fellowship. Amen.

Day 4: Breaking the Echo Chamber

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

One of the quiet traps of algorithmic technology is 'spiralism'-an echo chamber where a system simply validates your existing moods, anxieties, or perspectives, reflecting yourself back to you. But spiritual growth requires more than self-affirmation. The Word of God and the Holy Spirit do what no computer can do: they lovingly confront, convict, rebuke, and correct us so that we are transformed into the image of Christ.

Reflection When was the last time Scripture challenged an attitude or habit in your life, leading you to repentance and growth?
Prayer Father, search my heart and know my thoughts. Give me the humility to receive Your conviction and correction so I can grow into who You created me to be. Amen.

Day 5: An Embodied Community

"For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, 'This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.'" - 1 Corinthians 11:23-24

Faith in Christ is fundamentally physical and embodied. God created us with bodies, souls, and spirits, and He redeems our whole person. That is why the core practices Jesus gave the church-prayer, water baptism, and the Lord's Supper-cannot happen through a screen or an application. Coming to the Communion table requires physically gathering as the body of Christ to break bread and experience God's living presence together.

Reflection How does gathering in person with other believers strengthen your faith in ways that virtual content cannot?
Prayer Lord Jesus, thank You for the tangible grace of Your sacrifice. Help me faithfully love and serve Your living church as an active, present member of Your body. Amen.
