Look Deeper
A 5-Day Devotional Journey Through the Surface of Life and Scripture
Day 1: Beyond the Reflection
Theme: Moving past self-focus to see God's hidden movement.
Quote:
"If you only gaze at the surface, all you'll ever see is your own reflection."
Devotional:
When we look at a body of water without polarized lenses, the bright sun reflects right back into our eyes, blocking us from seeing the thriving ecosystem just beneath the surface. If we aren't careful, we can live our spiritual lives the exact same way. When hard times hit or prayers seem delayed, our immediate instinct is to look at the immediate surface of our circumstances. Because our vision is limited, we end up trapped in a loop of our own anxiety, fear, and frustration-only seeing our own reflection.
God does not want us to live shallow lives. He invites us to look past our immediate reactions and ask, "Lord, what are you doing below the surface?" True delight in God begins when we look past what is glaringly obvious and trust that His hand is moving in the deep, unseen places of our lives.
Reflection Question:
What current circumstance are you evaluating solely by what you can see on the surface? How can you invite God to shift your focus deeper today?
Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for being so consumed by what is right in front of me. Give me the spiritual vision to look past my own fears and frustrations. Help me to trust that even when the surface looks calm or confusing, You are actively at work in the deep. Amen.
Day 2: The Invitation to Pursue
Theme: Understanding why God conceals truth.
Scripture:
"It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; but to search out a matter is the glory of kings." - Proverbs 25:2
Devotional:
We live in a "microwave culture" that demands the obvious. We like things simple, direct, and immediate. Yet, as we study Scripture, we quickly discover that Jesus intentionally spoke in parables, hiding profound truths in simple stories. Why would a loving God conceal Himself or His truth? It isn't because He wants to keep us in the dark; it's because He wants us to pursue Him.
Brain science tells us that we value and remember what we have to work for. God designed our minds to deeply internalize conclusions that we actively seek out. When God conceals a matter, it is a divine invitation to relationship. He doesn't just want to hand us facts; He wants us to dig for the treasure so that the process of the search permanently alters our hearts.
Reflection Question:
Are you treating your relationship with God like a quick checklist, or are you taking the time to actively pursue and "dig out" His truth?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the invitation to seek You. Teach me to love the pursuit. When Your word or my life feels mysterious, let it draw me closer into prayer rather than driving me away in frustration. Amen.
Day 3: Finding Christ in the Wilderness
Theme: Finding Jesus in the Old Testament and our dry seasons.
Scripture:
"...and they drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ." - 1 Corinthians 10:4
Devotional:
The early church fathers taught that Scripture has a body (the literal words), a soul (the moral lesson), and a spirit (the revelation of Christ). If we only read the Old Testament as history or moral guidelines, we miss the heartbeat of the text. When Moses struck the rock in the desert and water poured out to save the dying Israelites, it wasn't just a historical miracle. It was a spiritual picture. As Paul reveals, *that rock was Christ.*
Jesus was right there in the wilderness, waiting to be discovered under the surface of the text. He is the one who was struck so that living water could flow to us. If you are in a dry wilderness season right now, look closer. The Rock that accompanies you in the desert isn't just a random source of relief-it is Christ Himself, sustaining you step by step.
Reflection Question:
How does knowing that Christ is the "Rock accompanying you" change how you view your current dry or difficult seasons?
Prayer:
Jesus, open my eyes to see You in every part of Scripture and every part of my story. Thank You for being my Rock in the wilderness. When I am thirsty and weary, remind me that Your living water is always available. Amen.
Day 4: The Third-Day Purpose
Theme: Trusting God's timeline when things seem dead.
Scripture:
"Any meat of the sacrifice left over till the third day must be burned up... it has become impure." - Leviticus 7:17-18
Devotional:
At first glance, the book of Leviticus can feel like a dry list of ancient, confusing rules. For example, God explicitly commanded that fellowship offerings could not be eaten on the third day-calling it an abomination. On the surface, it seems like a rule about food safety in the hot desert. But when we look deeper with the Holy Spirit, we find a beautiful "booby trap" of truth.
God was baking the reality of the resurrection into the law thousands of years before it happened. Jesus, our ultimate sacrifice, would not remain to see decay on the third day. He would be risen! God uses timelines that don't always make sense to us on the surface because He is pointing to a greater, resurrection purpose. When your dreams, your timeline, or your situations feel dead on day one or day two, remember that God has a specific, sovereign plan for the third day.
Reflection Question:
What area of your life feels like it is languishing or dead right now? Can you trust God's "third-day" resurrection power to bring life out of it in His perfect time?
Prayer:
Lord, Your timeline is completely perfect, even when it frustrates my earthly plans. Forgive me for rushing You. I trust that You have a resurrection purpose for the things in my life that currently feel dead. Teach me to wait for Your third day. Amen.
Day 5: Comfort vs. Destiny
Theme: Recognizing God's love in our broken plans.
Scripture:
"I love you too much to let your comfort stand in the way of your destiny."
Devotional:
It is easy to praise God when doors open, plans succeed, and life feels comfortable. But what about the 72-hour periods where everything falls apart? When doors slam shut, when losses occur, and when the jobs we hate get harder-our surface-level reaction is to throw a tantrum and question God's goodness. We ask, "If You love me, why is this happening?"
But looking deeper requires us to hear God's heart in the wreckage of our broken plans. God is not interested in merely keeping us comfortable; He is dedicated to fulfilling our eternal destiny. Sometimes, He allows our earthly comforts to be disrupted because He knows a smooth road would keep us from stepping into the true calling He has on our lives. Trust His painful "nos" just as much as His joyful "yesses." He knows what He is doing.
Reflection Question:
Looking back at your past trials, can you see a time where a broken plan or a closed door actually protected you or redirected you toward a better path? How can that comfort you today?
Prayer:
Father, I confess that I prefer comfort over growth most days. Thank You for loving me too much to let me stay comfortable at the expense of my spiritual destiny. I yield my plans to Yours today, trusting that Your vision for my life is far better than my own. Amen.
