Delighting in a Delightful God
A 5-Day Devotional | Fremont Community
Day 1: The Primary Goal
Focus: Making God our greatest satisfaction.
The greatest commandment is not just a call to obedience; it is an invitation to delight. Jesus made it clear that our highest priority is loving God entirely. If our goal each day is to leave our time of prayer feeling happy and satisfied in Him, our perspective shifts. We are reminded that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. Today, sit in prayer and focus solely on the goodness of God until your heart finds joy in His presence.
Day 2: Emotion and Action
Focus: Fusing how we feel with how we live.
It is easy to have "shallow sentimentality"-where we weep during a worship service but live unchanged outside the church doors. True love requires a balance. It must be both a complex, deep emotional attachment and an active choice to obey and serve. If we are high on emotion but low on action, our faith is incomplete. Ask yourself today: Do my daily actions reflect the emotional love I profess for God on Sundays?
Day 3: Moving Past Empty Rituals
Focus: Offering our hearts, not just our habits.
On the other end of the spectrum is high action with low emotion. It is possible to honor God with our lips, follow human rules, and practice religious mechanics without feeling a shred of actual love for Him. Jesus warned the religious leaders about this exact condition. God doesn't just want your service; He wants your heart. Today, examine your routines. Are you performing spiritual disciplines out of obligation, or out of a genuine affection for your Father?
Day 4: Becoming "Love Sick"
Focus: Cultivating a deep passion for our Creator.
In the Song of Solomon, we see a beautiful picture of a woman who is completely "love sick" for her beloved. This poetic romance reflects the kind of passionate, overwhelming love God desires from His people. It is a love that makes our spiritual blood pressure rise and our passion ignite. We may feel we don't deserve Him, but we can rest in the truth that we are deeply loved. Pray today that the Holy Spirit would make you truly "love sick" for Jesus.
Day 5: Empowered to Comprehend
Focus: Relying on the Spirit to understand God's love.
We cannot generate this kind of profound love on our own strength. We must ask the Holy Spirit to empower us. Paul prayed that the church in Ephesus would have the power to grasp how wide, long, high, and deep the love of Christ is. When we truly comprehend the vastness of His love for us, our natural response is to love Him back. Spend time today meditating on the specific ways God has been your Father, Forgiver, and Provider, and let that truth fill you to the fullness of God.
