Deliverance, Authority & Holiness

5-Day Devotional on "Lead Us Not into Temptation, But Deliver Us from Evil"

Fremont Community Church · Unlocking Prayer With Jesus (Part 6)
Monday · Day 1

Praying Beyond Our Natural Instincts

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." - Matthew 6:13 (ESV)
"If there is any phrase in the Lord's Prayer we would naturally forget to pray, it is this one. It doesn't immediately pop into our heads. That is why we must pray the scriptures and ancient prayers of the Church-because they train us to pray for things we wouldn't think of on our own." - Pastor Josh Hawkins, Sermon: Unlocking Prayer with Jesus (Part 6)

Left to ourselves, our prayer lives naturally shrink to the perimeter of our personal convenience. We eagerly ask God for our daily bread, physical health, financial relief, and relational comfort. But how often do we proactively fall on our knees and plead: "Father, keep my feet far from situations that would make it hard to stay holy, and shield my household from the unseen schemes of darkness"?

Jesus knew our blind spots. He understood that spiritual complacency is the most fertile soil for temptation. By placing this petition as the crowning request of His model prayer, Jesus reminds us that we live on a spiritual battlefield, not a cruise ship.

Praying ancient words-like the Lord's Prayer or St. Francis's plea to be made an instrument of peace-pulls us out of our self-centered bubble. Today, let this prayer expand your spiritual vision beyond the tangible needs of the moment to the eternal health of your soul.

Heart Check for Today: How much of your regular prayer life is focused strictly on physical comfort versus spiritual protection and conformity to Christ?

Lord Jesus, forgive me for how easily I forget the spiritual battle around me. Deliver me from self-centered prayer and give me eyes to see as You see. Guard my steps today, preserve my soul in purity, and lead me far away from every snare of the enemy. In Your holy name, Amen.

Tuesday · Day 2

"Shut Up and Get Out": Walking in Christ's Authority

"Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you." - Luke 10:19 (ESV)
"How did Jesus deal with spiritual darkness ninety-nine percent of the time? He didn't negotiate, conduct elaborate ceremonies, or hold conversations. He looked at it and said: 'Shut up and get out.' That's it. We have been given that same authority in His name." - Pastor Josh Hawkins, Sermon: Unlocking Prayer with Jesus (Part 6)

Popular culture portrays spiritual warfare with theatrics, anxiety, and dread. But when we look at the Gospels, Jesus treated demonic forces with calm, unshakeable authority. Demons shrieked, begged, and pleaded, while Jesus spoke concise words of command: Be silent, and come out of him.

Many believers treat their faith like a superstitious talisman-hoping that having a leather-bound Bible resting on a bedside table will somehow ward off darkness. But ink and paper have no power until the living Word of God enters the human heart and is wielded by the Holy Spirit. Spiritual authority is not about our personal strength or volume; it is rooted entirely in whose name we carry.

When thoughts of fear, torment, depression, or accusations attack your mind, you are not called to debate them or entertain dialogue with the enemy. By the authority of Jesus Christ and the power of His shed blood, you have the right to say: "Silence. Get out in Jesus' name."

Heart Check for Today: Are there persistent lies, fears, or accusations in your thought life that you have been passively tolerating instead of rebuking in the authority of Jesus?

Lord Jesus, thank You that the same power that raised You from the dead lives in me. I cast down every thought of fear, depression, and condemnation that tries to exalt itself against You. By the authority of Your name and the power of Your blood, I command the enemy to be silent and leave my home and heart. Amen.

Wednesday · Day 3

Co-Heirs in the Battle: Why God Waits for Our Prayers

"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth...'" - Genesis 1:26 (ESV)
"Why does God need us to ask Him to confuse the enemy? Because God created humanity to partner with Him in the rulership of creation. He takes the authority He gave us far more seriously than we do, and He rarely moves on earth without a praying human partner." - Pastor Josh Hawkins, Sermon: Unlocking Prayer with Jesus (Part 6)

A common question believers wrestle with is: "If God is sovereign and already knows everything, why must I bother asking Him to act?" Scripture reveals that God did not create humanity to be passive spectators in His universe, but active co-regents and kingdom partners. The Apostle Paul even made the shocking declaration: "Do you not know that we will judge angels?" (1 Corinthians 6:3).

When Pastor Josh received a vision of demonic forces gathered around a table plotting against Fremont Community Church, God didn't merely strike down the enemy silently; He revealed the threat so His people would rise up, pray, and declare: "Lord, confuse their schemes and dismantle their plans!"

Your prayers are not busywork to keep you occupied. They are the actual mechanism through which God's heavenly will is unlocked and established upon the earth. When you intercede for your family, your community, and your church, you are taking your seat at the council table of God.

Heart Check for Today: Do you view intercession as a dull religious duty, or do you recognize it as taking your rightful place of authority alongside Christ in governing the earth?

Heavenly Father, awaken my spirit to the dignity and weight of the authority You have entrusted to me in Christ. I stand in the gap today for my family, my church, and my community. Expose every hidden snare of darkness and establish Your righteous rule in our midst. Your kingdom come, Your will be done! Amen.

Thursday · Day 4

Skating on the Edge: The Danger of Compromise

"Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on." - Proverbs 4:14-15 (ESV)
"We like to skate right up to the edge of the cliff and say, 'I'm just looking; I won't fall in.' But the Lord says: 'If you cared as much about your holiness as I do, you would stay a long way away from temptation.'" - Pastor Josh Hawkins, Sermon: Unlocking Prayer with Jesus (Part 6)

Most spiritual shipwrecks do not happen overnight. They begin with small compromises-subtle rationalizations where we convince ourselves that we are strong enough to play near the fire without smelling like smoke. We flirt with atmospheres, media, conversations, or purchases that stir up covetousness, lust, pride, or bitterness.

Pastor Josh candidly shared his personal battle as a lover of tech and music gear, walking into Sweetwater Sound knowing it was a playground for covetousness-the very violation of the Tenth Commandment. While modern culture thrives on consumerism and perpetual discontentment, Jesus commands us to pray: "Father, don't even lead me into that environment. Keep my feet far from situations that jeopardize my walk with You."

If you genuinely desire to grow in holiness, stop asking how close to the line of sin you can walk. Instead, ask how close to the heart of Jesus you can draw. Wisdom doesn't test the strength of its brakes; wisdom avoids driving toward the edge of the cliff altogether.

Heart Check for Today: Where in your life are you currently "skating near the edge"-an app, a relationship, an environment, or an entertainment habit-hoping you won't fall?

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Show me any place where I have tolerated compromise, flirted with temptation, or made excuses for my pet sins. Grant me holy discernment and the courage to build radical boundaries that protect my walk with You. Keep my heart pure and upright before Your eyes. Amen.

Friday · Day 5

The Expulsive Power of a Greater Desire

"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." - Galatians 5:16 (ESV)
"You cannot defeat desire simply by negation. Willpower alone will always fail. But when a greater desire is awakened in you-when you want Jesus more than anything else-saying no to temptation becomes easy. The power of a greater love uproots the power of a lesser lust." - Pastor Josh Hawkins, Sermon: Unlocking Prayer with Jesus (Part 6)

Many sincere Christians live in exhausted defeat because they try to conquer sinful habits with sheer human willpower. They clench their fists, repeat negative affirmations, and stare at temptation while shouting inwardly: "I won't do it! I won't do it!" But focusing intensely on what you are trying to avoid usually pulls you straight into it.

The Gospel offers a radically superior path. Biblical sanctification is not the grim stoicism of suppressing desire; it is being captured by a glorious, breathtaking obsession with Jesus Christ. When an art collector falls in love with a priceless masterwork, he naturally stops caring about cheap counterfeits. When your soul tastes the majesty, holiness, and tenderness of Christ at His table, the fleeting pleasures of sin lose their magnetic pull.

As Pastor Josh prayed over the communion table: "Holy Spirit, blow on our cold hearts and set them ablaze again. Fan into flame the desire for holiness." Do not waste your energy fighting shadows; turn your gaze toward the beauty of Jesus, and watch the shadows flee.

Heart Check for Today: Are you trying to conquer temptation through willpower and self-effort, or are you regularly cultivating a passionate, intimate love for Jesus Christ in prayer and worship?

Holy Spirit, breath of the living God, blow across my heart today. Uproot every cold, indifferent, and religious routine in me, and set my soul ablaze with fiery desire for Jesus. Let Your beauty eclipse every worldly temptation, and transform me from the inside out into the likeness of Christ. In His matchless name, Amen.
