You Are the Place Where God Dwells

A 5-day devotional journey through 1 Corinthians 6:13-20 on the sacredness of your body, the hope of the resurrection, and carrying the Holy Spirit into everyday life.

Day 1 • Monday

Walking Portals of Heaven

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

- 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

There are certain places on earth where praying feels effortless. Standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon surrounded by eighteen miles of breathtaking beauty, or stepping into a quiet prayer room, our hearts naturally respond with awe. Spaces that help us engage with God are a wonderful gift-but if we aren't careful, we can start believing that God's presence is tied to a geography or a building.

In 1 Corinthians 6, the Apostle Paul drops a theological bombshell: you are the place where God dwells on earth. Not a stone temple in Jerusalem, not a cathedral, and not a mystical "energy vortex" in the desert. If you belong to Jesus, your physical body is the literal location of the Holy Spirit.

Think about what that means for your Monday. You don't have to take a pilgrimage to find God, and prayer is never a long-distance call. Because the Spirit of the living God lives inside of you, you are a walking portal between the throne room of heaven and the earth around you. The kingdom of heaven is present wherever you set your feet today.

Today's Reflection & Action

Point to yourself today and say out loud: "I am the place where God dwells." When you feel stressed or distant from God today, pause for 30 seconds, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that His Spirit is already present within you.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that I don't have to travel somewhere special to find You. Awaken my heart today to the shocking truth that You have chosen to make my body Your dwelling place. Help me live today with a constant awareness of Your nearness. In Jesus' name, amen.

Day 2 • Tuesday

Body, Soul, and Spirit

"The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body."

- 1 Corinthians 6:13b (NIV)

In the ancient world, Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle taught that the spiritual realm was pure and good, while the physical world was evil and corrupt. Over time, that idea crept into the church as a heresy called Gnosticism-the belief that we are merely "spirit beings" trapped inside the prison of a physical body.

When we separate our spirit from our body, we fall into one of two traps. Either we embrace harsh religious austerity-acting as if enjoying a good meal or earthly beauty is "sinful"-or we swing to the opposite extreme and say, "Since salvation is only spiritual, what I do with my physical body doesn't matter!"

Paul confronts both lies with a single, mind-blowing phrase: "The body is meant for the Lord, and the Lord for the body." You are not a spirit trapped in a shell. God intentionally designed you as an integrated human being-body, soul, and spirit. Your physicality matters deeply to Him. He created your senses, your strength, and your physical life to be a vessel for His goodness and glory.

Today's Reflection & Action

Have you ever treated your physical life as separate from your spiritual life? Today, thank God for your physical senses-sight, sound, taste, and movement-and invite the Lord into the ordinary, physical routines of your day.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I have divided my life into "spiritual" and "physical" compartments. Thank You for creating me body, soul, and spirit. Teach me what it means that my body is meant for You, and You are for my body. Amen.

Day 3 • Wednesday

Acorn to Oak: Our Resurrection Destiny

"By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?"

- 1 Corinthians 6:14-15a (NIV)

If you ask many people what happens when a Christian dies, they will tell you that our bodies are buried in the ground to turn to dust while our spirits float off to heaven forever. While it is true that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, stopping there misses the ultimate promise of Christian hope!

We follow a resurrected Savior. Jesus didn't stay in the grave, and neither will we. When Christ returns, He is going to physically resurrect our bodies and reunite them with our spirits. Paul compares our current bodies and our future resurrection bodies to an acorn and a mighty oak tree (1 Corinthians 15). They share the same DNA, yet the oak tree is infinitely more glorious.

Jesus' death and resurrection saves all of you-body, soul, and spirit. Because of that, even when death touches our congregation and breaks our hearts, we do not mourn as those without hope. We stand in the face of grief and declare, "Death, where is your sting?" The grave is only a temporary pause before our true destiny: living as fully transformed, immortal human beings ruling with Christ forever.

Today's Reflection & Action

Is there a situation, grief, or struggle in your life right now that feels insurmountable? Remind yourself today that the same power that raised Jesus physically from the dead is at work in you. Take a moment to pray for those in our church family walking through grief this week.

Prayer

King Jesus, thank You that You defeated death, hell, and the grave. Thank You that my story does not end in dust, but in resurrection glory. Comfort every grieving heart in our community today with the unshakeable promise that we will rise again. Amen.

Day 4 • Thursday

Reclaiming the Sacred

"You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

- 1 Corinthians 6:19b-20 (NIV)

We live in a culture that loves to strip the sense of sacredness out of everything, reducing the world to nothing more than random atoms and material. Yet we still understand sacredness in certain moments. If you visit the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and look through thick protective glass at the Declaration of Independence, you feel a sense of awe. It's technically just a 200-year-old piece of paper, yet no one would dream of breaking the glass and blowing their nose on it-because what it represents is sacred.

How much more sacred is the living temple of the Most High God? Paul reminds us that our bodies have been set apart for God's presence and bought with the precious blood of Jesus. That means your body is sacred.

Everywhere you go and everything you do, you are involving the Holy Spirit who lives inside of you. When we step into compromise, addiction, or immorality, we bring Him into that moment. Conversely, when we care for our bodies through rest, nourishment, and purity, we honor the One who lives within us. Even a much-needed afternoon nap can be holy when we recognize our bodies belong to the Lord!

Today's Reflection & Action

Examine your habits today-both what you expose your body and mind to, and how you care for your physical health. What is one practical way you can treat your body as a sacred temple today, whether by turning away from a compromise or giving yourself healthy rest?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, plant a deep revelation in my heart that my body is sacred because You live in me. Give me the grace to hold back from anything that defiles Your temple, and help me honor You in how I care for my mind and body today. Amen.

Day 5 • Friday

Shifting the Atmosphere

"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace."

- Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV)

Knowing that you are the temple of the Holy Spirit shouldn't just keep you from going to the wrong places-it should also compel you to boldly walk into the right ones!

Too often, we think of holiness as hiding away from a broken world so we don't get contaminated. But when you realize that the all-powerful Spirit of God dwells inside your physical body, your perspective flips. You can look at a workplace, a school hallway, a tense family gathering, or a hurting neighborhood and say, "That place needs a temple in it. That room needs the presence of God to walk in and change the atmosphere."

Every situation you step into today, God's power is present there because you are there. Every person you meet today isn't just meeting you-they are encountering the dwelling place of Jesus Christ, whether they realize it or not. Walk into your Friday with confidence, humility, and joy: you are a carrier of the presence of the Most High God.

Today's Reflection & Action

Before you walk into work, a store, or a conversation today, pause at the door and pray: "Holy Spirit, I am bringing Your temple into this room. Let Your peace and power shift the atmosphere here."

Prayer

Lord, make me a bold carrier of Your presence today. Everywhere I set my foot, let Your kingdom come and Your peace be felt. May every person I interact with today encounter Your love and grace through me. In Jesus' name, amen.
