Deliver Us - Unlocking Prayer with Jesus

Oct 4, 2026  •  Pastor Josh Hawkins

Why did Jesus command us to pray, "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil"? In Part 6 of our series "Unlocking Prayer with Jesus," Pastor Josh Hawkins tackles the petition we are most prone to forget—and the one we need most in an increasingly dark world.

Discover the two vital dimensions of this prayer:

1. The Cosmic Dimension: Recognizing the reality of the unseen realm, exercising the authority of Jesus ("Shut up and get out!"), understanding our divine calling as human partners in God's rulership, and preparing our souls for the end of days.

2. The Personal Dimension: Confronting our tendency to flirt with compromise, recognizing our own "Sweetwater Sound" moments of covetousness, and realizing that willpower alone can never defeat sin—only the expulsive power of a greater desire for Jesus Christ can set us free.

📖 SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

• Matthew 6:13 & Luke 11:4 – The Lord’s Prayer: Temptation & Deliverance

• Genesis 1:26–28 – Humanity’s mandate to exercise dominion

• 1 Corinthians 6:3 – Believers ruling and judging angels

• Luke 10:19 & James 4:7 – Christ's authority over spiritual darkness

• Exodus 20:17 – The 10th Commandment: "Thou shalt not covet"

• Matthew 24:22 – The days of testing shortened for the elect

• 1 Corinthians 11:23–26 – Re-centering our desire at the Lord’s Table

• Numbers 6:24–26 – The Aaronic Blessing

🔑 KEY TAKEAWAYS:

1. The Authority of Jesus: Jesus didn't negotiate with demons; He told them to "Shut up and get out." Believers don't rely on superstition, lucky charms, or closed Bibles on nightstands—our authority comes from the living Holy Spirit and the blood of Jesus within us.

2. Divine Partnership: God created humans to partner with Him in governing creation. He rarely intervenes in earthly affairs without a praying human partner because He honors the dominion He entrusted to us.

3. The Sweetwater Syndrome: We often deliberately skate close to the edge of temptation, telling ourselves "I'm just looking." But if we cared as much about our holiness as God does, we would stay far away from the ledge.

4. The Power of a Greater Desire: You cannot defeat sinful desire merely by negation or white-knuckled willpower. A lesser affection is only broken when your heart is overwhelmed by a superior love for Jesus.

💬 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
